Summer Rooftop Bars and Terraces - Al Fresco Drinking Across Fulham

As summer settles over our beloved corner of SW6, there's nothing quite like watching the sun dip behind the Thames while sipping a perfectly chilled drink in good company. Fulham's outdoor drinking scene has blossomed beautifully in recent years, offering everything from intimate terraces tucked away on quiet residential streets to sprawling riverside gardens that capture our neighbourhood's unique blend of urban energy and village warmth.

Riverside Royalty

The jewel in Fulham's al fresco crown has to be The Crabtree on Rainville Road. This Thames-side gem boasts one of London's most enviable beer gardens, stretching right down to the water's edge. On a warm evening, families gather at picnic tables while couples claim cosy corners overlooking the river. The pub gets particularly busy during Boat Race season and summer weekends, so booking ahead is essential. Expect to pay around £6-7 for a pint, but the setting more than justifies the premium.

Just upstream, The Captain's Table offers a more intimate riverside experience. Their compact terrace might be smaller, but the views across to Barn Elms are spectacular, especially during golden hour. It's perfect for a quieter drink when The Crabtree feels too bustling.

Hidden Rooftop Gems

Venture into the heart of our neighbourhood and you'll discover some delightful surprises. The Cock Tavern on New King's Road has transformed its upper level into a charming roof terrace that feels like a secret garden above the busy street below. Surrounded by potted plants and fairy lights, it's become a favourite spot for local professionals unwinding after work. Tuesday to Thursday evenings are your best bet for snagging a table without booking.

Over on Fulham Road, The Atlas has created a lovely outdoor space that perfectly captures our area's sophisticated village vibe. Their heated terrace means the season extends well beyond summer, and their excellent gastropub menu makes it ideal for those long, lazy weekend afternoons that Fulham does so well.

Garden Sanctuaries

Some of Fulham's best outdoor drinking happens in beautifully maintained pub gardens that feel like private oases. The White Horse on Parsons Green is legendary among locals, not just for its extensive beer selection but for its gorgeous walled garden. Shaded by mature trees and dotted with comfortable seating areas, it's where you'll find three generations of the same families gathering on Sunday afternoons.

The Temperance on Fulham High Street surprises first-time visitors with its unexpectedly spacious beer garden. Hidden behind the Victorian facade, this green sanctuary offers plenty of space for children to play safely while parents enjoy a well-deserved drink. The kitchen serves excellent wood-fired pizzas that are perfect for sharing on warm evenings.

Modern Marvels

Fulham's newer establishments haven't forgotten the importance of outdoor space either. The Distillers on Fulham High Street has created a stylish courtyard that brings a touch of contemporary sophistication to our traditional pub scene. Their craft cocktail menu changes seasonally, and the outdoor heaters mean you can enjoy their creative concoctions even when the temperature drops.

For something completely different, head to Eight Over Eight on King's Road. While technically straddling the Fulham-Chelsea border, their pan-Asian cuisine and sleek outdoor terrace offer a change of pace from traditional pub gardens. The cocktails are pricier (£12-15), but the quality and presentation are exceptional.

Local Tips for Al Fresco Success

The golden rule for Fulham's outdoor drinking scene is timing. Weekend afternoons and early evenings are prime time, so booking is strongly recommended, especially for larger groups. Many venues don't take reservations for outdoor tables, operating on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving by 5pm on weekdays or 2pm on weekends gives you the best chance.

Most of our local spots are wonderfully family-friendly until around 7pm, when the atmosphere naturally shifts towards adult socialising. The White Horse and Temperance are particularly welcoming to families, with dedicated children's areas and excellent food menus.

Price-wise, expect to pay standard London rates (£5-7 per pint), though the Thames-side venues command a small premium. Many pubs offer excellent happy hour deals between 4-6pm on weekdays, perfect for those working from home who can steal an early finish.

Remember to dress appropriately for changeable British weather. Even our warmest summer evenings can turn chilly once the sun disappears, and most outdoor spaces provide limited shelter from sudden showers. Pack layers and perhaps a light jacket, because once you've secured that perfect spot overlooking the Thames or tucked into a fairy-lit garden corner, you won't want to leave.
