The Ultimate Fulham Pub Crawl - A Local's Route Through SW6's Best Boozers

There's something magical about a proper pub crawl through our corner of southwest London. Fulham's drinking establishments tell the story of our neighbourhood – from centuries-old coaching inns that welcomed weary travellers to modern gastropubs serving the finest Sunday roasts this side of the Thames. Whether you're planning a birthday celebration or simply fancy exploring the local scene with friends, this carefully curated route will take you through SW6's most characterful boozers.

The Perfect Starting Point: Fulham Broadway

Begin your journey at The White Horse on Parsons Green Lane, affectionately known as 'The Sloaney Pony' by locals. This Harvey's pub has been serving the community since 1688 and remains wonderfully unpretentious despite its proximity to the more polished establishments. The beer garden is perfect for afternoon starts, and their pie selection provides essential sustenance for the journey ahead. Expect to pay around £5-6 for a pint, and arrive before 3pm on weekends to secure outdoor seating.

A five-minute stroll along New Kings Road brings you to The Cock Tavern, a proper local boozer that's retained its authentic character despite gentrification pressures. The friendly staff know their regulars by name, and the traditional pub games create that village atmosphere we cherish in Fulham. It's rarely crowded before 6pm, making it ideal for your second stop.

Wandsworth Bridge Road Gems

Head north towards The Temperance on Wandsworth Bridge Road, a beautifully restored Victorian pub that strikes the perfect balance between historic charm and contemporary comfort. Their craft beer selection is exceptional, and the upstairs dining room serves some of the neighbourhood's best gastropub fare. The Sunday quiz draws families and couples alike – book ahead if you're planning to eat, as tables fill up quickly after 7pm.

Just around the corner on Stephendale Road, The Atlas offers a Mediterranean twist on the traditional pub experience. The wood-fired oven produces incredible pizzas that pair beautifully with their extensive wine list. While slightly pricier than typical pub fare (mains £12-18), the quality justifies the cost, and children are welcome until 8pm, making it perfect for family celebrations.

The Fulham Road Stretch

Make your way to Fulham Road for The Golden Lion, a Young's pub that epitomises everything wonderful about traditional British boozers. The snug feels like someone's living room, complete with well-worn sofas and a crackling fireplace during winter months. Their bitter is consistently excellent, and the pub grub represents outstanding value – hearty portions under £10.

Continue east to The Harwood Arms if you're feeling ambitious (and flush with cash). While technically a Michelin-starred restaurant, it maintains its pub credentials with excellent ales and a relaxed atmosphere earlier in the evening. Booking is essential for dining, but the bar area welcomes walk-ins. Expect gastropub prices (£7+ for drinks), but the quality is unmatched in SW6.

Perfect Finishing Spots

For your final destination, choose between two exceptional options depending on your group's energy levels. The Blue Anchor on Lower Mall offers riverside views and a chance to work off those drinks with a stroll along the Thames Path. The historic pub has welcomed everyone from artists to aristocrats, and the terrace provides stunning sunset views during summer evenings.

Alternatively, The Crabtree Tavern on Rainville Road offers similar Thames-side charm with a slightly more intimate atmosphere. The pub's position right on the river makes it feel wonderfully removed from urban bustle, despite being minutes from central Fulham.

Practical Planning Tips

This route covers roughly two miles and works best spread across 4-6 hours, allowing time to savour each establishment's unique character. Weekend afternoons (starting around 2pm) provide the most relaxed pace, while weekday evenings offer a more local experience with fewer tourists.

Transport connections are excellent throughout the route. Fulham Broadway tube station serves as a natural starting or ending point, while numerous bus routes along Fulham Road ensure easy journeys home. The 14, 28, and 295 buses connect most stops on this crawl.

Remember to pace yourselves and eat regularly – several pubs offer excellent bar snacks, and the neighbourhood's abundance of late-night eateries provides plenty of options for post-crawl sustenance. Most importantly, embrace the community spirit that makes Fulham's pub scene so special. Strike up conversations with locals, ask bar staff for recommendations, and discover why these establishments remain the heart of our wonderful neighbourhood.
